In a world craving diverse representation, “America Chavez” is a sight for sore eyes: she’s Marvel’s first Latin-American LGBTQ character to star in an ongoing series. And writer Gabby Rivera is the real-life superhero behind her.

With America, as well as her celebrated novel Juliet Takes a Breath, Gabby draws inspiration from her own background as a queer Latinx, to bring her vibrant characters to life. Her talks delve into the importance of diversity, and the importance of encouraging young people develop their creativity—never shying away from tackling the tough questions, and always offering thoughtful, progressive solutions. How we can take back power in the media through amplifying diverse voices? And how can we use not only the art of comic books, but other media, to enhance our cultural concept of the “her” to be more inclusive and representative of the population? Speaking to her own inspiring work as well as others’, Gabby explores how art and writing can disrupt the status quo in powerful, beautiful ways.

Registrants will receive a confirmation email and a login link both 24 and 1 hour prior to the event. PLEASE be sure to check spam.
