Come and join us to learn fundamental songwriting skills to help you craft a piece that speaks to you, your experiences, and your emotions.
Does music creativity inspire you? Are you interested in writing your own Hip-Hop lyrics but don’t know how to start or finish a song? Come and join us to learn fundamental songwriting skills to help you craft a piece that speaks to you, your experiences, and your emotions. Spend an hour with local legend Von Vargas, an artist, DJ, producer, and streetwear designer from Baltimore, MD. Mr. Vargas will discuss songwriting tips and principles with the audience, as well as career paths and the application of songwriting skills to business and employment. We hope aspiring artists and/or business people of all genres and generations will come spend some time with an artist who is “the real deal,” an award-winning and very experienced professional in the business of song-writing, a trustee of the organization that selects GRAMMY award-winners, a teacher, a writer, and producer of hip-hop music. We may even test your skills with an exercise or two.
This event will be held in the 5th floor, meeting room of the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library.

Hear from DJ Johnny ‘Juice’ Rosado, a renowned and multi-talented figure in Hip-Hop culture.
DJ Johnny ‘Juice’ Rosado is a renowned and multi-talented figure in Hip-Hop culture. His diverse skills as a composer, producer, turntablist, engineer, musician, B-boy, graffiti writer, MC, educator, lecturer, and mentor have left an indelible mark on the culture, earning him an Emmy and NAACP Image Award nomination. Raised in the Bronx, Juice was at the heart of hip-hop’s birth and progression. In the late ’70s, he mastered the art of breaking (rocking) and became a top-tier dancer and mentor to younger talents, including Busta Rhymes.
In the early ’80s, Juice moved to Long Island, quickly becoming a key player in the nascent local Hip-Hop scene. His work with Public Enemy, Son of Bazerk, and the Bomb Squad production team are legendary, cementing his place in Hip-Hop history. Over nearly four decades, he has collaborated with iconic artists such as Mandrill, Mavis Staples, Beastie Boys, Slick Rick, Leaders of the New School, KRS-One, DMC, C+C Music Factory, X-Vandals, Billy Joel and Trilogy, showcasing the breadth and depth of his influence.
Juice’s work on ESPN’s “Ali Rap” earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Composition.
Currently his focus has shifted towards film and TV scoring. He recently received three NAACP Image Award nominations, including Best Album for the soundtrack of “On The Shoulders of Giants,” proving his enduring relevance in a constantly evolving industry.
As the Global Vice President of The Bronx Boys Rocking Crew, the first Latino breaking (dance) crew, and pioneers of floor rocking since 1975, Juice continues to inspire and shape the next generation of Hip-Hop enthusiasts. His contributions were recently recognized with his induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as a member of Public Enemy in 2008, and again in 2013 with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
