Literary Garden: The Kensington Park Library was very fortunate to receive a gift of landscape plans for a literary garden from local resident and landscape architect, Karin Johnson. Karin, recently graduated from GW, used the KP Library grounds for her master project to create a literary garden.  Her plan includes seven distinct gardens with sustainable elements and design objectives. Click to see plans, Literary Garden Concept Plan 2015 and Literary Garden Master Plan 2015

  • Entrance Garden: “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free” – Frederick Douglass, abolitionist, writer and statesman
  • The Enchanted Forest Garden: “The forbidden forest looks as though it had been enchanted, each tree smattered with silver, and Hagrid’s cabin looked like an iced cake.”  – JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • The Wizard of Oz Garden: “Follow the yellow brick road!” – L. Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz
  • The Parking Lot Garden: “So be sure when you step, step with great tact and remember that life’s a great balancing act” – Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go
  • The Edible Garden: “There Once Was a Very Hungry Caterpillar…” – Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • The Children’s Garden: “Let the wild rumpus begin!” – Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are
  • The Dewey Decimal Garden: “The weeds are flowers, too, once you get to know them.”  – A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

We need support from the community to make this project a reality. Donations of plants, seeds, funds are most appreciated. Contact us if you can help: See the Get Involved @ KP tab for specific ways to help.

Donations: We welcome financial support from the community. The membership form includes donation directions. The FOL-KP board sends thank you emails to recognize individual donors; this message also serves for tax purposes. Large donations additionally are recognized by FOLMC. The newsletter includes a Thank You, Donors! section where names (not amounts) are listed.

In 2016, we met our goal of $15,000. We also were grateful to our first corporate sponsor!
