Join us for our next Chapter Meeting

Join us for our next meeting on September 25, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. As a part of our Annual Meeting we will be featuring a presentation by Chevy Chase author, Melanie Choukas-Bradley about her book The Joy of Forest Bathing—Reconnect with Wild Places & Rejuvenate Your Life.

Local naturalist and author Melanie Choukas-Bradley will give us an inspiring presentation about the increasingly popular practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. Shinrin-yoku began in Japan in the 1980s and it is rooted in the long-standing Japanese reverence for nature. Through beautiful slides taken on her recent trip to Japan and in our own backyard, Rock Creek Park, Melanie will show you how you can weave this simple practice into your everyday life. Learn about the mental, physical and emotional benefits of quiet time spent in nature that have been demonstrated in health studies around the world. Melanie will sign her books after the talk.

Melanie is a certified nature and forest therapy guide and author of five nature books, including City of Trees, which has been in continuous print in three separate editions for 37 years. She frequently leads forest bathing walks, nature walks, and tree tours for the Audubon Naturalist Society, Rock Creek Conservancy, The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Botanic Garden, Politics & Prose, Smithsonian Associates and other organizations. She lives in the Town of Chevy Chase with her husband Jim. The couple have two adult children.

Melanie will be available to sign her new book about forest bathing as well as her popular award-winning nature memoir, A Year in Rock Creek Park.

Foreign Film Showings at the Chevy Chase Library

In December of 2011, the Friends of the Library, Chevy Chase Chapter started sponsoring the monthly showing of foreign films at the Chevy Chase Library. Initially, films were shown in the summer months — June, July and August — but since 2013 the movies have been shown every month.

The showings take place on the 1st Saturday of the month and start at 2 p.m.

Please come and enjoy the films. There is, of course, no price of admission and no need to register in advance. The titles of the films to be shown are posted on the calendar on the Montgomery County Public Library web site and colorful posters about each film are are posted in the Library during the month preceding each showing.  For more information, call the Chevy Chase Library at 240-773-9590.

Book Groups and the Jefferson Cafe at the Chevy Chase Library

Did you know that there are book groups that meet at the Chevy Chase Library? There are . . . and not just one, not just two, but three.

In conjunction with the Montgomery County Public Libraries, the Friends of the Library, Chevy Chase Chapter coordinates two book discussion groups. All are welcome!!

The Non-Fiction Book Group meets at 2 p.m., on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, unless there is a conflict with a holiday in which case another meeting date is selected.

The Fiction, Memoir and Biography Book Group meets at 2 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of each month (except for August), again unless the date has to be changed due to a holiday.

Books to be discussed are posted in advance on the Montgomery County Public Libraries web site.

Copies of the books to be discussed are usually available on the “hold” shelves at the Chevy Chase Library at least a month prior to the discussion dates.

A third group, Great Books, meets at 7:30 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of each month (except for July and August and sometimes June). The Friends of the Library, Chevy Chase Chapter plays no role with regard to this group.

In addition to the book groups, the Jefferson Café®, which meet at 10:30 a.m. on the 3rd Friday of each month (except for August), provides a format for grassroots discussion, focusing on topics in American life and the role of the United States in the global community. On rare occasions, a speaker is invited to present information to stimulate discussion.

The Café takes the name of Thomas Jefferson because he was one of our most intellectual presidents, he delighted in stimulating conversation around a dinner table, he lived far enough back in time to evoke no particular partisan identification, and his life raises many interesting and provocative questions.

The group is generally limited to 15 participants so that everyone can see and hear everyone else while sitting around a table. We strive for full participation, asking those who are comfortable speaking in public be sensitive to the fact that others are more cautious about expressing themselves, and that those who are shy by nature try to find an opening without necessarily waiting to be called on.

Copies of the articles to be discussed are available at the Library’s reference desk without charge. Funding for reproducing the articles is provided by the Friends of the Library, Chevy Chase Chapter.

For more information on the book groups and the Jefferson Cafe® please contact the Library at 240-773-9590.
