Annual Report 2009-2010

After a banner year of programming and activism, Friends of the Library, Bethesda Chapter, is facing a time of change. The chapter hasn’t changed, but the library system we cherish is going to be a more austere place in the coming year. Reductions in library hours, staff and collections will also mean cutbacks in programs – both those run by the librarians and those run by FOL-B. The challenge will be to see how we redefine ourselves –- we can’t and shouldn’t be trying to gloss over what patrons will understand as a new age for our library, but at the same time, we will be called upon and must respond.

At this time, it’s great to celebrate all that the past year has been to Bethesda.

Senator Jennie Forehand and her husband Bill will discuss the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) at the Rockville Library (in Town Center) on June 12 at 10:00 a.m. This talk is primarily for young people in grades 3-8, but all are welcome.

The Forehands traveled the Lewis & Clark route by car, boat, and long hikes from St. Louis to the Oregon coast. The presentation will cover many aspects of the Lewis & Clark adventure — reasons for the trip, modes of travel, tools used, food eaten, and hardships faced, as well as the land, people, animals and plants that the Corps of Discovery observed during their 7,000 mile, 2 ½ year trip.

A highlight of the talk will be Bill’s handmade models of Lewis & Clark’s Fort Clatsop (in Oregon), the “salt works” for making salt from sea water, a Mandan Indian lodge, and the different type boats the Corps used on their journey. These models will be on display at the library during the month of June.
