This program is free and is suitable for all ages.

Famous Mime, Mark Jaster, will perform his one-man show A Fool Named “O”

Developed and featured at the Maryland Renaissance Festival, “O” uses the simplest of props: a wooden hoop, a cloth, and some musical instruments (and non-instruments!) that might have been available to a medieval fool, and engages the audience in some really old-fashioned fun.

Audiences of all ages and backgrounds have enjoyed Mark Jaster’s kinetic humor, playful interaction, musical wit and inventive imagination. His skills in mime were developed in training with 20th-century masters Marcel Marceau and his teacher, E. Decroux, along with careful observation of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harpo Marx. Jaster served as teaching assistant to Mr. Marceau in a series of seminars in Michigan, and he teaches frequently in Artist residencies, theatres, and dance programs. Mark is also co-director of Happenstance Theater.

Mark Jaster - Piccolo's Trunk

His work combines live music on unusual instruments and non-instruments, outrageous acrobatics, and hyper-advanced communication skills with honest, gentle humor and playful interaction, obliterating many a skeptic’s antipathy toward mime. The Washington Post called Mark Jaster a “clown extraordinaire and one of the most graceful performers you will ever see on a stage.” The Baltimore Sun called him “immensely gifted.”

Two debut authors discuss their women-centric world-wise novels

Join us in a lively discussion with two acclaimed Washington-area debut authors whose books transport you into the lives of compelling women in another time, another place:

• The Civilized World, an O Magazine “Book to Pick Up Now,” by Susi Wyss — a glorious literary novel in stories set in Africa, follows five Ghanaian and American women, two of them haunted by a shared tragedy, as their lives intersect in unexpected and sometimes explosive ways.

Susi Wyss earned a master’s degree in fiction writing from Johns Hopkins University, and has received various grants and awards, including two Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council. She currently lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she balances creative writing with her work at Jhpiego, a Baltimore-based international health organization. Her debut novel in stories, The Civilized World, is inspired by her 20-year career in international health.

• The Calligrapher’s Daughter, 2009 Borders Original Voices Award winner, by Eugenia Kim — a sweeping debut, inspired by the life of the author’s mother, about a young woman who dares to fight for a brighter future in early twentieth-century occupied Korea.

Eugenia Kim is the daughter of Korean immigrant parents who came to America shortly after the Pacific War. She has published short stories and essays in several anthologies and journals, including Potomac Review, and Asia Literary Review. An MFA graduate of Bennington College, Eugenia teaches fiction at Fairfield University’s MFA Creative Writing Program. She lives in Washington, DC. The Calligrapher’s Daughter is her first novel.
