Friends of the Library has designated February as Library Lovers Month! Library Lovers Month gives all us a chance to recognize and express our appreciation for all that our libraries and librarians do for us year round. Libraries are an amazing source for knowledge, entertainment, and company.
Join us as we celebrate and advocate for our amazing libraries in Montgomery County, especially in light of the budget woes.
Celebrate!Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Quince Orchard Library at 1:00 p.m. for the kick-off Library Lovers Month celebration with Grammy-nominated musicians Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl from Milkshake! There was rock-music that parents, babysitters, and children alike appreciated, good for all ages. The Baltimore based group, self-professed library lovers, kicked off the month-long celebrations with a free concert, open to all. After the performance, Friends of the Library, Montgomery County had coloring and craft activities for children, and parents were invited to join the chapter or fill out a postcard.
There are events throughout the County for all ages- just check out the calendar below to find your perfect fit. There are give-aways at all local branches and Friends bookstores, from pencils, postcards, and bookmarks to chocolate! Several of the librarians have “Steal a Kiss” stations– chocolate kisses, that is!
You can support Montgomery County Public Libraries throughout the year, but especially during Library Lovers Month. Donating time, money, and expertise helps us ensure that our libraries are as amazing as we know they can be.
Everyone knows our Libraries provide us with books, but they also give access to computers and circulate DVDs, videos, and audio tapes to the public. They provide a multitude of vital services to our community year round, including classes and job search assistance, many of which are free of charge.
There are opportunities to attend local government meetings and public hearings where you can voice your support for our libraries, which are being hit hard yet again by the county government cutbacks. Libraries are not a frill, but rather a vital part of our community. You can use our postcards to write the county council and let them know how much libraries mean to you, send an editorial to the local papers, or send letters and emails.
If you aren’t already a member, this is also the perfect time to join or make a donation to Friends of the Library to show your support.

Special Event, February 14, 2009
Coming to the library is like a “de-stresser” for me.
It’s a lot cheaper than buying books…and better for the environment – it’s recycling.
It has something about everything and people to help you find it!
The children’s area is especially nourishing for the young ones.
I meet a new friend and spend my free time here (relax).
The library is the one and only service provided to all county residents regardless of age, race, income, etc. It is our one common benefit.
Cutting the library’s budget is sure to impact every single county resident.
It helps me learn new things that I don’t know about.
I love the library because it gives book for every age.
Allows me to bring my child to explore the joy of books.
I love to see more programs for children that keeps them from bad things and they become a good citizen.
It is the central hub for every one 1 to 90.
Coming to the library is one of my favorite things.
MCPL’s audio books sweeten my commute and treadmill time.
It teaches me new stuff & how to be when I grow up. Teaches me to be smart.
It is filled with endless knowledge on every subject.
I love books! I wish I could afford to buy all the ones I want to read, but the library lets me borrow them so that I never run out.
Look for work.
With out economy situation, the library is a bargain.
You have magazines that help with house and car problems.
I grew up in libraries and came to get my 13 yr old a book to read.
It is for everyone, and you can learn and discover new things everyday.
I love to read and libraries provide me with this opportunity.
I’m often at the library and see how well used it is.
People are always very pleasant and helpful with all of our questions and requests.
